Biomarkers as tools for monitoring within the Water Framework Directive context: concept, opinions and advancement of expertise ArchiMer

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) currently supports chemical and ecological monitoring programmes in order to achieve the good water surface status. Although chemical and ecological assessments are necessary, they have some limitations. Chemical approaches focus on certain substances identified as priorities, but they do not take into account other potentially harmful substances and also ignore the hazards related to contaminant cocktails. On the other hand, while ecological approaches provide holistic information on the impairment of biological communities in ecosystems, they do not distinguish the role of contaminants in these alterations, and consequently do not allow the establishment of contaminant impact reduction plans. Consequently,...

Relationships between metal bioaccumulation and metallothionein levels in larvae of Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to contaminated estuarine sediment elutriate ArchiMer
Geffard, A; Geffard, Olivier; His, Edouard; Amiard, Jc.
The bioavailability of Cd, Cu and Zn from a metal-contaminated sediment was studied using Mytilus galloprovincialis embryos and larvae exposed to sediment elutriates, The elutriate concentrations tested were always lower than the threshold at which abnormal larval development appears. The Cd, Cu and Zn contents of the sediment, of the elutriate and of the larvae, as well as the larval growth, the condition index (CI), and the induction of metallothionein (NIT) in the larvae were measured. The Cl was only affected after 96 h of exposure, principally at the highest elutriate concentration (25%, corresponding to 0.1435 mug Cd l(-1) and 14 mug Zn l(-1)). Cd, Cu and Zn bioaccumulation was observed (48 and 96 h), in whole larvae as well as in the cytosolic...

Toxicite potentielle des sediments marins et estuariens contamines : evaluation chimique et biologique, biodisponibilite des contaminants sedimentaires ArchiMer
Geffard, Olivier.
Marine and estuarine sediments concentrate various pollutants. Thus, they can constitute a risk of contamination for aquatic organisms, and cause a public health problem. The potential toxicity of various sediments was studied by different bioassays and by assessing the bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and metals they contained. Among the various stages of development investigated in oysters, Crassostrea gigas, and in sea urchins, Paracentrotus lividus, oyster embryos and larvae proved to be the most sensitive and useful tool for the evaluation of sediment effects on benthic organisms (whole sediment treatment ; embryotoxicity test) as well as on pelagic species (elutriate treatment; embryotoxicity and larval growth tests)....
